Born and raised in the New Orleans area, I have always been active and had a passion for sports. It wasn’t until I left for college I started putting on unwanted pounds.
It wasn’t until I graduated and went on to pursue a Masters in Exercise Science that I had my wake up call. One day in a graduate class our professor assigned us to partners. He wanted us to perform body fat percentage measurements on our partner in class in front of everyone. I was completely embarrassed to find out that I was over 30% body fat; it was 33% to be exact. For those of you that are unfamiliar with what that means, the normal range for women my age is 25-31% and 32%+ is obese. I couldn’t believe it! I had one degree in health and I was on my way to my second degree in health and exercise science and I was OBESE. At that moment my life changed. I was determined to get on the right track to better my health. I thought to myself ”how am I going to teach people to live a healthy lifestyle when I have no control over my health?”
I attended Louisiana Tech University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health Promotion and I found myself overweight and unhealthy. I was eating anything and everything and my lack of exercise lead me to gain not just the freshman 15 but the freshman 25.
After graduating, I went on to provide fitness programming for the students, faculty and staff at Louisiana Tech University (LATECH) and Louisiana State University (LSU). I helped educate students to take control of their health and shared my experience with weight gain so they would not follow down the same path I did.
I am now a mommy of a beautiful baby girl. I hit my goal of getting back to my pre-baby body 10 months after having her. I lost a total of 52 lbs I gained while pregnant. I am a living, breathing example that consistency and hard work pay off.
I hope to inspire and motivate others to do the same.
